History

In the spring of 1972 the New Albany-Floyd County Secondary Schools’ held the first Art Show at the Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. During the first years of the show the five Best of Show awards (grades 8 –12) were increased from $10 each to $25 each by the spring of 1998. Merit awards, totaling $350 in cash and $150 in non-cash, were also added over the years from 1973-1999.



On September 1,1998, one of the Art teachers began the Art Awards Annual Fund to provide awards for students in the Art Show. Fundraising increased the awards from the previous year’s total of $625 to $3,600 for cash and non-cash awards in the spring of 2000 and each year since.



On September 1, 1999 the Art Awards Trust Fund was founded at the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana. By December 2003, $14,000 had been raised toward the long-range goal of $30,000 needed to provide the awards year after year. The Art Awards Trust is a permanent source of funds for the awards for our students for the 21st Century.



In the spring of 2002 the Art Show celebrated its 30th Anniversary. 2005 will mark the 36th year for the Show. It continues to be a unique opportunity for out students to show their creative efforts in an art gallery venue. The show is one of the few opportunities for competition and for students to show their work to the general public. The Art Awards Fund is the organization that raises and provides fund for Awards for students in the New Albany-Floyd County Secondary Schools’ Art Show. This is the only Show and Competition exclusively for Floyd County students.



The Art Show and Competition and the Art Awards have been made possible by the generosity of individuals and organizations in our community. The show has had the support of the School Corporation since the beginning.
